    Screening in Ionic Systems: Simulations for the Lebowitz Length

    Simulations of the Lebowitz length, ξL(T,ρ)\xi_{\text{L}}(T,\rho), are reported for t he restricted primitive model hard-core (diameter aa) 1:1 electrolyte for densi ties ρ4ρc\rho\lesssim 4\rho_c and TcT40TcT_c \lesssim T \lesssim 40T_c. Finite-size eff ects are elucidated for the charge fluctuations in various subdomains that serve to evaluate ξL\xi_{\text{L}}. On extrapolation to the bulk limit for T10TcT\gtrsim 10T_c the low-density expansions (Bekiranov and Fisher, 1998) are seen to fail badly when ρ>1/10ρc\rho > {1/10}\rho_c (with ρca30.08\rho_c a^3 \simeq 0.08). At highe r densities ξL\xi_{\text{L}} rises above the Debye length, \xi_{\text{D}} \prop to \sqrt{T/\rho}, by 10-30% (upto ρ1.3ρc\rho\simeq 1.3\rho_c); the variation is portrayed fairly well by generalized Debye-H\"{u}ckel theory (Lee and Fisher, 19 96). On approaching criticality at fixed ρ\rho or fixed TT, ξL(T,ρ)\xi_{\text{L}}(T, \rho) remains finite with ξLc0.30a1.3ξDc\xi_{\text{L}}^c \simeq 0.30 a \simeq 1.3 \xi_{\text {D}}^c but displays a weak entropy-like singularity.Comment: 4 pages 5 figure

    The Effects of Rotation on the Evolution of Rising Omega-loops in a Stratified Model Convection Zone

    We present three-dimensional MHD simulations of buoyant magnetic flux tubes that rise through a stratified model convection zone in the presence of solar rotation. The equations of MHD are solved in the anelastic approximation, and the results are used to determine the effects of solar rotation on the dynamic evolution an Omega-loop. We find that the Coriolis force significantly suppresses the degree of fragmentation at the apex of the loop during its ascent toward the photosphere. If the initial axial field strength of the tube is reduced, then, in the absence of forces due to convective motions, the degree of apex fragmentation is also reduced. We show that the Coriolis force slows the rise of the tube, and induces a retrograde flow in both the magnetized and unmagnetized plasma of an emerging active region. Observationally, we predict that this flow will appear to originate at the leading polarity, and will terminate at the trailing polarity.Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures, ApJ in pres

    Systems described by an O(n) symmetrical ϕ4\phi^4 Hamiltonian are considered in a dd-dimensional film geometry at their bulk critical points. The critical Casimir forces between the film's boundary planes Bj,j=1,2\mathfrak{B}_j, j=1,2, are investigated as functions of film thickness LL for generic symmetry-preserving boundary conditions nϕ=c˚jϕ\partial_n\bm{\phi}=\mathring{c}_j\bm{\phi}. The LL-dependent part of the reduced excess free energy per cross-sectional area takes the scaling form fresD(c1LΦ/ν,c2LΦ/ν)/Ld1f_{\text{res}}\approx D(c_1L^{\Phi/\nu},c_2L^{\Phi/\nu})/L^{d-1} when d<4d<4, where cic_i are scaling fields associated with the variables c˚i\mathring{c}_i, and Φ\Phi is a surface crossover exponent. Explicit two-loop renormalization group results for the function D(c1,c2)D(\mathsf{c}_1,\mathsf{c}_2) at d=4ϵd=4-\epsilon dimensions are presented. These show that (i) the Casimir force can have either sign, depending on c1\mathsf{c}_1 and c2\mathsf{c}_2, and (ii) for appropriate choices of the enhancements c˚j\mathring{c}_j, crossovers from attraction to repulsion and vice versa occur as LL increases.Comment: 4 RevTeX pages, 2 eps figures; minor misprints corrected and 3 references adde

    We study the reliability of the reconstruction method which uses a modelling of the redshift distortions of the two-point correlation function to estimate the pairwise peculiar velocity dispersion of galaxies. In particular, the dependence of this quantity on different models for the infall velocity is examined for the Las Campanas Redshift Survey. We make extensive use of numerical simulations and of mock catalogs derived from them to discuss the effect of a self-similar infall model, of zero infall, and of the real infall taken from the simulation.     Probability distribution of the order parameter in the directed percolation universality class

    The probability distributions of the order parameter for two models in the directed percolation universality class were evaluated. Monte Carlo simulations have been performed for the one-dimensional generalized contact process and the Domany-Kinzel cellular automaton. In both cases, the density of active sites was chosen as the order parameter. The criticality of those models was obtained by solely using the corresponding probability distribution function. It has been shown that the present method, which has been successfully employed in treating equilibrium systems, is indeed also useful in the study of nonequilibrium phase transitions.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
